We are searching the UK for 30 talented, enthusiastic and hard-working 16-19 year olds to take part in the BFI Film Academy Residential: Exhibition and Distribution at Showroom Cinema, Sheffield. The course runs from Sunday 23 July 2017 until Saturday 29 July 2017, so please make sure that you are available for all of these dates before application.
This intensive week-long residential will give young filmmakers a real insight into the exciting world of cinema, and equip you with skills and experience that are essential to becoming part of our future film industry.
The course will give you the opportunity to enjoy a diverse programme of films and take part in masterclasses and workshops with industry experts. You will explore areas such as festivals, programming, film writing, film marketing for commercial and independent cinema.
Throughout the duration of the course, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience in exhibition and distribution and have the exciting opportunity to work in groups to design and plan your own ‘film season’ focusing on a genre of your choice, with the winning season/s being programmed at Showroom Cinema.
You will also meet lots of other interesting, creative and like-minded young people from across the UK, and will together become part of the BFI Film Academy Alumni, entitling you to exclusive opportunities after the course has ended, such as attending the ‘This Way Up’ conference in Glasgow.
You will be mentored throughout your time at the academy, and will get the chance to meet various industry professionals on a daily basis who can help guide you and give you tips on how to kick-start your career in film.
Sound like the opportunity of a lifetime?
BFI Audience Academy is open to young people from anywhere in the UK, from any background.
The fee ranges from £0 to £210 for the course, depending on which income bracket you fall into, including accommodation and food. However, a generous bursary scheme ensures that the cost will not prevent anyone from taking part — if you have the talent we will make sure you can attend.
In order to apply for any BFI Film Academy course, you must:
be aged 16-19 years old on the first day of the course
not be attending university at the time of the course (if you're starting in September then that's O.K.)
have a passion or talent for film and an ambition to work in the film industry
be able to commit to the duration of the course
Depending on your financial circumstances we will fund some or all of the cost, and also have a separate fund that can help with any travel, childcare or other prohibitive costs.
Please note: If you have previously been on a BFI residential course, you are unfortunately ineligible to apply for the BFI Residential, but any participation in non-residential BFI network academies is fine.
What did some of last year's students think?
Katya "It exceeded all of my expectations! I also met loads of lovely people who I will stay in contact with for a long time."
Ben "I was impressed by the broad range of speakers and films shown. I learned a lot by the end of the week."
Tilly "The amount of amazing people that came to talk to us and shared their knowledge was so great. The other people doing the course are so nice too."
